こんにちは。フィンランドから豊橋技術科学大学に留学しているHeikkiです。6月20日から9月20日にかけて、WEBIMPACTでインターンシップの機会を頂きました。そこで、WEBIMPACTが行っているプロジェクトに寄与するだけでなく、自分の専門分野に関するスキルも身につくお仕事ができました。
私が携わったのは、IoTを活用して豊橋市内の人流を予測し、そのデータを市内の店舗のマーケティングや地域の活性化に活用することを目標としたプロジェクトでした。そのデータは、まちなかの人の密集度合を調べることでCOVID-19のようなウイルス等の拡散を防ぐためにも活用することができます。このデータはセンサーを使って通行人のモバイル機器から出る信号を集めることで収集しています。集めたデータには個人情報は含まれず、通信内容の傍受もありません。
まず私が参加したのは、お店への来店者一覧を表示するページの開発でした。特定の店舗に一定時間以上滞在した来店者を見つけるのに役立ちます。この機能は店舗の経営者向けに、顧客の振る舞いについて洞察しデータに基づく判断の一助になるように設計されています。この開発に加わったことで、私はWEB開発、データベース管理、機能的でかつユーザーフレンドリーなUIデザインについて深い経験を得ることができました。初めて触れる技術もありましたが、WI社員の皆様が支えてくださり、私の学習を導いてくれました。
それから、AWS Forecastに触れる機会も頂きました。集めたデータを基にした人流予測の精度を上げる仕事です。これまでは、Bluetoothを活用したセンサーのデータとWi-Fiを活用したセンサーのデータという、取れるデータの量や性質が異なるものを、同じ推論モデルに投入して予測を行っていたため精度が下がっていたという問題がありました。これを、センサーごとに違う予測アルゴリズムに渡すように手直しして改善しました。データセットにはタイムスタンプや、一定時間内にどれだけの人がセンサーの検出範囲を通ったかなどのデータが含まれます。これらのデータの他に、天気や祝日の情報も予測アルゴリズムでは利用しています。この仕事での経験は特にやりがいがあって、データサイエンスと実世界のアプリケーションを組み合わせることや、AWSについて学ぶことができました。
技術的な話以外でインターン中に面白かったこととして、WEBIMPACTの受け入れ体制があります。豪華な歓迎会があって、私もチームの一員なのだと感じられました。
総括すると、私がWEBIMPACTで過ごした時間は間違いなく忘れがたい価値のあるものでした。実践的なスキルが得られただけでなく、日本でのプロフェッショナルな仕事についてもより深く理解できました。このような機会を頂けたことに感謝しています。そして、ここで学んだことを将来に役立てるのが楽しみです。

Hello, I’m Heikki from Finland and I am studying in Toyohashi University of Technology. I recently had the opportunity to intern at WEBIMPACT, where I spent three months (20.6. to 20.9.) working on various projects that contributed to both my professional growth and the company’s ongoing projects.
The project I worked on during my internship was Toyohashi Smart City (TSP). The goal of the TSP project is to utilize the Internet of Things to gather and predict the flow of people throughout the city. This data can then be used to revitalize the stores by improving marketing. The data can also be used to prevent the spread of viruses such as COVID-19 as it can be used to determine the crowds of people in the city. This data is gathered by using small sensors that gather signals that are emitted from peoples mobile devices when they are walking by. The data gathered is completely anonymous and does not intercept any communication.
In the TSP project, I was involved in developing a visitor list page, which helps to track the visitors to specific stores over a timeframe. This feature was designed to provide valuable insights into customer behavior, helping store managers make data-driven decisions. Working on this project allowed me to dive into web development, database management, and user interface design, ensuring that the final product was both functional and user-friendly. While some of the technologies were new to me, my coworkers were supportive and guided me through the learning process.
Additionally, I had the chance to explore AWS Forecast, where I worked on improving the company’s ability to predict visitor flows and improve the accuracy of forecasts based on different metrics. The improvements were done by separating and running prediction algorithms per different sensor types. The dataset includes information such as timestamps, a bucket value that tells how many people have gone past the sensor in a configured timeframe and of course the sensor identifier. Additional data that helped the prediction algorithm included information such as weather information and national holidays. This experience was particularly rewarding as it allowed me to combine data science with real-world applications and also allowed me to learn about AWS.
Beyond the technical work, one of the highlights of my internship was the welcoming environment at WEBIMPACT. I felt like a part of the team, and was given a great welcome party.
Overall, my time at WEBIMPACT has been valuable and no doubt unforgettable. I have not only gained practical skills but also a deeper understanding of working in a professional setting in Japan. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to applying what I have learned in my future endeavors.
